Christmas Treasure Hunt

DAY 1
It was a freezing cold Christmas Eve in the small town of Applefield. Outside it was snowing heavily. All the children were sleeping peacefully tucked in their warm blankets except Emma and Tom, who were trying to find the solution to a puzzle that their teacher had given them.
Can you help them find the answers?

In which country do families have dinner at KFC on Christmas EVE? When did this tradition start?
Who is Befana?
When do kids in Italy get their presents?
What does an elf look like?
What is a Christmas cracker?

DAY 2

There are five houses of different colors next to each other on the same street.
There are also five children who each live in one of these houses (with each child not living with the other four). Every child has a single favorite drink, a single favorite food.
On Christmas Day they all got a different pet from SANTA!
1. Peter lives in the red house.
2. Mary has a dog.
3. Linus drinks tea.
4. The green house is just to the left of the white one.
5. The child in the green house drinks lemonade.
6. The child who likes cookies has birds.
7. The child in the yellow house likes chocolate.
8. The child in the middle house drinks milk.
9. Emma lives in the first house.
10. The child who likes sweets has a neighbor with a cat.
11. The child who likes chewing-gum drinks apple juice.
12. The child who has a horse lives next to the child who likes chocolate.
13. Anna likes cake.
14. Emma lives next to the blue house.
15. The child who likes sweets lives next to the child who drinks water.
QUESTION: Who has  a fish?

DAY 4
Who is The MYSTERY man?
He was born in 1916 in Wales from Norwegian parents. He was very tall and good at sports. He went to a boarding school. He wrote many short stories, poems and novels for children and adults. There is a museum in England about him. He could fly a plane and he loved chocolate. He died in Oxford in 1990.

A classmate you will never forget!

After asking my students to transform a text about the ideal friend/classmate (Think Teen 2, page 14)
by changing all positive adjectives into negatives, they came up with very creative ideas. I enjoyed reading about their rivals, enemies and bullies as much as they enjoyed writing about them.
So I decided to use their texts and their best ideas into one text for them to read.

So here it is:
MARCUS THE TERRIBLE IV
I want to tell you about my terrible new classmate His name is Markus the Terrible IV!.
He is older than me because he missed a year- he is a really bad student. As you can see from the photo he has got really long, oily black hair and brown, evil eyes. His face is wrinkled and spotty, his nose is always running and he has an awful smile with yellow teeth, the worst smile I have ever seen. He  laughs like a nerd and blue spit comes out of his mouth. He is so disgusting and obnoxious. He is always sweaty and he stinks like a cow! He hasn 't taken a bath for ages!
Unfortunately the teacher made me sit next to him! I was furious with my teacher's decision!
I cannot see him in the eyes because he looks like an enormous jellyfish and I don't want to be turned into a rock!
He comes from a rich family and he is very spoiled. His parents are so odd! His dad is a dog keeper and his mum owns a fast food restaurant. He has a younger sister, called Martha, who looks like a homeless girl.
Markus always takes my things without asking me and insults me and my friends.
I am not afraid of him. I just want him to leave me alone. We don't make a good team. His taste in music is terrible, he doesn't like football, he fights with everybody and cheats at tests.
Moreover, he is rude and selfish.I think he is a psychopath who has escaped from a mental hospital or an alien who is visiting the Earth.
We are never going to be friends!

Congratulations to all who had fun writing about this imaginary enemy!

On the way!

This week the focus is on TRAVEL.
We will talk about what we need for a trip, where and how we travel.
We will explore other countries and start some interesting projects and activities:
The travel agency roleplay
The travel brochure
The travel ad
At the hotel
Whimsical travel ( on Alladin's carpet or Mary Poppin's umbrella etc)
Shipwrecked

We will study quotes about travelling.
We will tell stories and jokes that occur because we miscommunicate.
On second thought this week is not enough so it might take a little longer...

Back to school

September again!
This year I am using several ice-breakers and self awareness activities to help me learn the names of my students as fast as I can.
1) I write NADISEP on the board and tell them to decifer my name
2) I bring a bag with things that are important for me ( goggles, pencil, brush, ticket, photo) and they try to make true statements about me. They have to bring a bag about themselves the next day
3) We talk about dreams, feelings, expectations and consequences ( I break an egg to show them that sometimes we cannot repair things)
4) We talk about priorities and procrastination and we do the JAR experiment ( fill a jar with stones, pebbles and water in the correct order to show how everything can fit in)
5) We use a ball of yarn and hold a part of it to introduce ourselves and say what makes us unique
6) Establish a classroom contract
And we also have a lot of fun with the dividing line on the floor while I give them choices for ex cats or dogs, and they have to choose which side to go to!

Stranded on a Desert Island

IMAGINE that your students were on a cruise to some remote islands in the Pacific.
ASK them to tell you what they have packed for their holiday.

BUT THEN something terrible happens...
Your students find themselves shipwrecked after a terrible storm on a sandy shore.
Their ship has hit a reef and it will probably sink in a couple of hours.
Show them the photo for inspiration.
Can they see a lifeboat in the background?

They don't know if somebody else lives on the island.
They have a few minutes to decide which objects they will need to take from the ship to help them survive and find a way back home.
Will they need any of the things they had packed in their suitcases?

Students form groups of 4-5 and think about the use of the objects shown in the flashcards. Each team is allowed to take 5 objects.
They have to consider how to signal their presence on the island,
find shelter, water, food, light a fire etc.
Then the teacher presents them with different scenarios and they have to find ways to cope with the new situations:

a. They see a plane flying above the island.
b. A cargo ship passes in the horizon.
c. It starts to rain.
d. They hear a roar coming from the forest.
e. They find footprints on the shore.
f. They decide to explore the island.
g. Pirates arrive on the island to hide their treasure.
h. One of them gets sick.
i. They find a box on the shore.
j. They write a message in a bottle to tell the world where they are.
k. They discover another island a few miles on the north.

TIME FOR...

The wheel of activities can be used by both teacher and students,
it adds variety to the lesson and helps with time management.
